On Wednesday, Meta introduced its latest smart glasses, continuing its strategy to merge physical and virtual experiences, despite facing significant financial setbacks. The highlight of the event was the launch of the Ray-Ban Display smart glasses, which feature integrated screens that enable users to view messages, photos, and other content as if they are looking at a smartphone.

Next-Generation AI Glasses

Marketed as the most advanced AI glasses from Meta, the Ray-Ban Display comes equipped with sensor-laden wristbands known as neural bands, allowing users to control the glasses through subtle finger gestures. The retail price for these innovative glasses stands at $799. “Our ambition is to create stylish eyewear that offers personal superintelligence and a sense of presence with realistic holograms,” stated Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, during the company’s annual developers conference. “These concepts together form what we refer to as the metaverse.”

Long-Term Vision for AI-Infused Smart Glasses

Zuckerberg envisions that smart glasses enhanced with AI technology will emerge as the “next major computing platform,” potentially replacing smartphones in the future. The company has been heavily investing in virtual reality and metaverse technologies for around four years. In a significant branding shift, Zuckerberg renamed Facebook to Meta in late 2021 to align with this new focus. However, Meta’s Reality Labs, which encompasses its virtual and augmented reality projects, has repeatedly reported substantial financial losses, including a staggering $4.5 billion loss in the second quarter of this year, with revenues amounting to merely $370 million.

Analyst Leo Gebbie from CCS Insight commented on the financial outlook for Reality Labs, stating, “There’s little chance that sales of smart glasses will yield profits for this division in the near term.” He emphasized that the focus is on a long-term vision to move away from smartphone dependency, where Meta faces fierce competition from giants like Apple and Google, and to establish its own path in the wearables market.

The Evolution of Smart Glasses

The concept of smart glasses has been in development for over a decade, with early attempts like Google Glass introduced in 2013, which has since been discontinued. In contrast, Meta has found more success with its Ray-Ban-designed eyewear, which includes features such as a built-in camera, music playback, and voice interaction with its AI.

Market Potential for Smart Glasses

The global market for smart glasses was valued at nearly $2 billion last year and is expected to surge to an annual figure of $8.26 billion by the end of the decade, according to data from Grand View Research. Meta stated, “The next computing platform is becoming clearer,” highlighting that AI glasses can enhance our real-life experiences while providing access to a vast array of information.

New Releases: Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta Vanguard

Zuckerberg also introduced the new Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta Vanguard smart glasses. These products build upon the partnership established in 2019 between Meta and EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban and Oakley. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses have achieved remarkable success, becoming the best-selling AI glasses globally, with millions sold since their launch. Key features include hands-free photo and video capabilities, the ability to summon a digital assistant, and real-time language translation. The starting price for the new Ray-Ban smart glasses is $379, while the Oakley Meta Vanguard, designed for athletes, is priced at $499. Meta stated, “We developed Oakley Meta Vanguard for high-intensity sports, featuring an action-ready camera, fitness app integrations, and immersive audio to enhance your workouts.”
